Trading and exchange
One of the key aspects to homesteading is to get away from consumerism by adopting an economic approach that is based in trade, exchange and barter. The idea is to create as little waste as you can by being able to exchange your excess (harvest, product and so on) for something that you need. Cash money should be reserved for things that you absolutely have to have, but can’t trade an item you have grown or created. There are many places where you can go to begin to get involved with this type of community – and community is the right term for it – this type of bartering is found in many easily identifiable groups.
•The community garden – people tend to swap not just bumper crops, but they will also bring in sauces they have made with their produce and other dishes. This is also an excellent place to find out more about what is available in your area.
•Your local farmer’s market. While many of them have become more boutique than food markets – that can work to your advantage. It is relatively inexpensive to get a booth and you can sell or trade your produce or crafts for what you need.
•Find a full time RV park – full time RV-ers live essentially as mobile homesteaders. Bartering and trade is common with this group. Try contacting the Escapees to find out where you can find them in your area.
•Go on line and post what you have, and what you need. There are tons of free bartering sites set up to support this kind of exchange.
